'BROKEN VILLAGES'
GUGULETHU
“I feel most of our stories as Africans are misinterpreted internationally, so as a visualpractitioner I try to show a different side of a perspective as to allowing people to draw new conclusions through what they see in my imagery”. - Gugulethu
Gugulethu is a 25 year old self taught visual artist from Johannesburg in South Africa,
Soweto to be specific which is a township that shares huge significance in his work.
Gugulethu’s work centres around African narratives as he reimagines the way they
are represented to the world, acknowledging the value of storytelling.
Gugulethu is creative director on a collaborative project called “Broken villages”
where he works with Visual Director Mpumelelo Buthelezi aimed at storytelling.
The project displayed in the post is titled Belonging, blinded choices it explores how
choices have an impact on our lives as individuals as a way of belonging to different
situations and/or groups. Personally I feel we belong because of choices made either
by ourselves or for us by other individuals..etc...parents or forefathers.
I do all this by focusing on tickling three aspects namely spirituality, gender
identification and values/customs.
